LiminAnimal: The Monster in Late Victorian Gothic Fiction

The animal characteristics of the monster in late Victorian gothic fiction make visible the biopolitical rationalisation of life in modern societies. Key moments in Bram Sto- ker’s Dracula and R.L. Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde provide evidence for the animality of late Victorian gothic monsters. In an extended reading of Richard Marsh’s 1897 novel The Beetle, this essay shows how the liminality of the monster in late Victorian gothic fiction is rhetorically articulated as a figural aberration that can only be reabsorbed into the dominant discourse by the use of animal imagery. In the face of ever more sophisticated calculations concerning populations in the nineteenth century, Victorians’ increased awareness of humans’ animality as Darwin’s theory of evolution became culturally assimilated allowed this transformation to be encoded as a biological mutation. The monster’s status as a limi- nal creature that occupies an indeterminate zone between human and animal draws attention to biopower’s dividing practices, which create social categories, such as race, that come to be understood as biological classifications

ABSTRACT: The main objective of the present work is the design and study of a medium voltage distribution network. The study consisted of designing with the help of PowerWorld a distribution network with a main generator and a network of loads that are connected at different nodes of the circuit. To this we must add several renewable energy sources at various points in the system. Using PowerWorld, we will simulate the system in different usage scenarios and compare voltages and currents to see how the system works and to be able to detect any possible anomalies.ABSTRAKCYJNY: Głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest zaprojektowanie i zbadanie sieci dystrybucyjnej średniego napięcia. Badanie polegało na zaprojektowaniu za pomocą programu PowerWorld sieci dystrybucyjnej, w której znajduje się generator główny oraz sieć odbiorników, które są przyłączone w różnych węzłach obwodu. Do tego musimy dodać kilka odnawialnych źródeł energii w różnych punktach systemu. Używając oprogramowania PowerWorld przeprowadzimy symulację systemu w różnych scenariuszach użytkowania i porównamy napięcia i prądy, aby zobaczyć jak działa system i wykryć ewentualne anomalie.RESUMEN: El objetivo principal del presente trabajo es el diseño y el estudio de una red de distribución de media tensión. El estudio consistió en diseñar con la ayuda de PowerWorld una red de distribución que cuente con un generador principal y una red de cargas que se conectan en diferentes nodos del circuito. A esto le debemos añadir varias fuentes de energía renovable en varios puntos del sistema. Utilizando el programa PowerWorld simularemos el sistema en distintos escenarios de uso y compararemos tensiones y corrientes para ver el funcionamento del sistema y poder detectar alguna posible anomalía.Grado en Ingeniería en Tecnologías Industriale

El capital social como enfoque teórico en Dirección Estratégica

[EN] The objective of this research paper is to investigate, from a theoretical point of view, the strategic relevance of social capital. In recent years, academic literature in this field has witnessed remarkable growth, recognizing social capital as a key element for companies, due to its contribution to the creation of competitive advantages. However, it might be said that its development is still emerging, given the number of discrepancies among researchers regarding its definition, measurement, and its positive or negative impact on other variables. For this reason, a set of empirical studies that show the social capital effect on diverse types of organizational results have been reviewed, taking as a reference the definition and dimensions proposed by Nahapiet and Ghoshal (1998). Additionally, different theoretical links between social capital and four related Strategic Management approaches are presented, such as the Intellectual Capital-Based View, the Knowledge-Based View, the Resource-Based View and the Dynamic Resource-Based View. A main conclusion drawn from this review is that social capital, being a knowledge-based resource, enables access to both internal and external resources and thus a firm’s competitive advantage and, consequently, its value creation can be generated from the combination of both areas. Going in depth and clarifying this strategic linkage are thus a challenge to address in future studies.[ES] El principal objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar la relevancia estratégica del capital social organizacional desde un punto de vista teórico. En los últimos años, la literatura académica relacionada con este concepto ha experimentado un notable crecimiento, reconociendo que el capital social es un elemento fundamental para que las empresas generen ventajas competitivas. Sin embargo, se podría afirmar que su desarrollo es todavía incipiente al existir multitud de discrepaciancias entre los investigadores acerca de su conceptuación, la medición de sus dimensiones o los efectos positivos o negativos que podría tener sobre otras variables. Por este motivo, tomando como referencia la definición y dimensiones propuestas por Nahapiet y Ghoshal (1998), se ha realizado una revisión de las investigaciones que, de manera empírica, han estudiado las relaciones entre el capital social y distintos tipos de resultados organizacionales. Igualmente, se exponen diferentes nexos teóricos encontrados entre el capital social y los principales enfoques en Dirección Estratégica como son Enfoque Basado en el Capital Intelectual, el Enfoque Basado en el Conocimiento, el Enfoque Basado en los Recursos y el Enfoque Basado en las Capacidades dinámicas. Se concluye que el capital social, como recurso basado en el conocimiento, podría permitir el acceso a otros recursos internos o externos, y que la creación de valor y la generación de ventajas competitivas de una empresa puede provenir de la combinación de ambos ámbitos. Así, futuros estudios deben encaminarse hacia la profundización y clarificación de este nexo estratégico

La escoba de bruja del cacao [Crinipellis perniciosa (Stahel) Singer] en la región del Piedemonte Llanero de Colombia: perfil de pérdidas de frutos de cacao por marchitamiento de pepinos, agentes criptogámicos e insectos

<p>El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la perdida de frutos de cacao debidas a la infección ocasionada por C. perniciosa, en el contexto de las pérdidas totales a causa de diferentes factores. Se encontró que el 10,5% de los frutos se perdió por los ataques de escoba de bruja y que las mayores pérdidas registradas eran debidas al marchitamiento fisiológico. Los frutos fueron más susceptibles a la enfermedad en el transcurso de sus dos primeros meses de edad, con una pérdida del 88% del total de los frutos afectados por la escoba de bruja. La distribución de frutos enfermos de acuerdo con el estrato del árbol no mostró diferencias importantes, siendo proporcional a tres estratos diferenciados en el árbol.</p&gt

THEORETICAL STUDY AND PERFORMING EDITION OF SONATA III BY JAVIER G. COMPEÁN

Mexican composer Javier G. Compeán finished Sonata III, his most recent composition for solo guitar, in December 2015. Since the composition of his first such work in 2003, the composer has been experimenting with texture, register, dynamic range, extended techniques, harmonic possibilities, timbre, and form in his solo guitar music. In Sonata III, Compeán applied the experience he gained in previous compositions for guitar. This work represents the composer’s current style, in which he returns to a more traditional language but continues to experiment with the technical capabilities of the instrument. Sonata III is Compeán’s most ambitious guitar composition and one of the most important twenty-first century contributions to the Mexican guitar literature. This research focuses on the production of a performing edition of Sonata III. This research also includes a comprehensive analysis of Compeán’s solo guitar music to provide context for guitarists so that they can better understand the composer’s style

MT1a mRNA Expression in Human Lung Cells (BEAS 2B) After Airborne PM10 and Copper Exposure: A Possible Biomarker for Asthma

Puerto Ricans have the highest prevalence, morbidity and mortality of asthma than any other ethnic group in the U.S. and can be triggered by different stimuli such as airborne Particle pollution (PM). PM transfers transition metals, including cooper, to the human airways generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Metallothionein protein (MT1A) is a free radical scavenger expected to be induced in lung cells by PM exposure; however, this has never been proven nor demonstrated. The hypothesis involves the amounts of PM10 in 2004, which would be significantly higher in the urban sites during months of March and June, thereby increasing PM metal exposure and inducing MT1A gene at the urban site. PM10 filters for Urban (Guaynabo) and rural (Fajardo) site were provided by the PREQB. Organic extracts were prepared from filters by means of Soxhlet Extraction and heavy metals were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. BEAS-2B cells were cultured and exposed to PM10 during 4 hrs. RNA was isolated and relative mRNA levels of MT1A were determined by RT-PCR. Urban PM10 concentrations were 35 ug/m3 and 60ug/m3 for the months of March and June, respectively. Concentrations of copper for this urban PM10 were 29.6 ppm and 50.3 ppm, for March and June, respectively. Exposure to Cu leads to an MT1A expression in lung cells demonstrating its response to metal exposure. Cellular response for the mRNA expression of MT1A was greater in relative high inflammation markers than in PM10 samples
